Chloe Lewis | Artist Statement
Chloe Lewis’s work as an illustrator plays with the language of shape, line, and color. She focuses on the colorful vibrancy of childhood and the process of realizations through learning and living.
Lewis’s work Exploring illustrates the story of a girl making her way through obstacles that are presented to her within the accordion composition. Through her process of exploring she learns her own way of dealing with her circumstances, not knowing what awaits in the next moment and being okay with not knowing. She does this by looking into a moment and gaining insights that help her cope. Each fold is a moment that represents, in our lives, the present. Life is just a series of moments strung together. As she makes her way through each fold she realizes that life is just a journey of figuring out who you are.
Lewis carved block prints to create the primary forms in this piece and added texture and line using gouache. Her color choice was largely influenced by the vibrant, playful colors of childhood: green, blue, yellow, and red with bright pops of fluorescent pink. The paper for the piece was cut from a large 8-foot sheet of drawing paper, and then measured, cut, folded, and adhered together. A wax-coated string was sewn at the top of each piece for hanging, and pine dowel hangers were cut, sealed, and painted for the display.
Chloe Lewis is a freelance illustrator living and working out of New York City. She graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a BA in 2018.
